About the Howland Local Schools Band Program:
Howland Local Schools in Warren, Ohio established its band program in the 1920s. A tradition of musical opportunities and excellence has followed for the students of Howland for the last century. In that time, Howland High School has had only five previous band directors: Roger Coe Sr., Robert Alexander, Charles Tewksbary, James Jackson, and Nancy Moore. The current directing team took over in 2009.
There are many facets to the Howland High School instrumental music program. “The Musical Pride of Howland” also known as the Howland "Tiger" Marching Band is 155 members strong. All band students in grades 9-12 participate in this non-competitive show-style marching band. The "Tiger" Band performs at marching band shows throughout the valley, at Kennywood Park's fall fantasy parade in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, for the Mahoning Valley Scrapper's minor league baseball team and halftime at Youngstown State University football games. In November of 2016 the Tiger Band performed on the Court at the "Q" in Cleveland, Ohio for the Post-Game for the NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers, and as a feature during the "Q's" official MLB World Series Watch Party for the Cleveland Indians. In October of 2017 the "Tiger" Marching Band performed at the Ohio State University "Buckeye" Invitational. In October of 2019 the "Tiger" Band performed at Stambaugh Stadium at halftime of a Youngstown State University Football Game. In November of 2023 the "Tiger" Marching Band had the performance of a lifetime marching in the "Festival of Fantasy Parade" in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. After the fall marching band season comes to a close, band students have opportunities to perform with the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Pep Band.
The Howland Symphonic Band is Howland High School's top instrumental performance ensemble. The group is composed of students in grades 10-12 who earn their chair by audition. The Howland Concert Band is another other outstanding performing group composed of students in grades 9-12. Both bands compete at OMEA District Large Group Adjudicated event held at Howland High School in March. Jazz Ensemble meets twice a week after school and performs at local jazz festivals as well as at other community events throughout the year.
